X230 VCCSA control

the silly way!

Just give me the schematics!

... ok. (if you cannot see the images properly click on them.)

cut the via connecting the two pads on R1638, remove R1638, connect two long wires from the two pads, keeping in mind the left one is the sense- and that the right one is GND, connect a wire to the VCCSA rail for monitoring(you can get this on the back of the CPU or on the right pin of R1634).now, in an external board connect a variable resistor (I used a 10k one, the higher the maximum resistance the more range you have, 10k is enough to kill the machine). if you want you can add a switch to bypass the variable resistor, the voltage is monitored between GND and VCCSA (duh)

Why?

because Vdimm control wasn't enough and this could be useful at booting harder to run sticks such as 2Gbit Samsung D-die (that I currently own zero good samples of).

Do I need to be careful of anything?

make absolutely certain that the sense- is never open from the GND, that would result in the CPU and likely VRM dying.

Can you help me with the mod/figure out how to do this on another machine?

absolutely not.

I am unsure, should I do this?

no.

Was this even useful?

not really, not with my memory configuration but it could very well be if you use harder to run dram revisions

here's a sample of what improved

a collage

and a CPUZ validation

Can this be improved?

yes but at this point you are better off getting another board with a nicer CPU

NOTE: You also obviously do this at your own risk and I am not responsable for anything that you might break.

here's your navigation buttons, as much as I find them silly.
